Holiday Season 2010

I was trying to sleep and Jack was rummaging around in my purse. After a while he stood next to the bed saying "Look Nancy!" I thought it was a little purse or bag until he hung it on the tree. When Sean woke up Jack said, "Sean, look! I have something very special to show you!"

5:16 is the new 6:15

Jack has a sheet of paper that says "6:15" on it so he knows what the clock is supposed to look like before he gets out of bed. At 5:19 or so this morning he was discussing the matter with Sean and Jack said, "but if you turn...the...paper...around....then it's time to get up!" not rocket science, but still!

Thanksgiving 2010

Two highlights from a lovely evening at Jen and Matt's house:

Jack is hanging onto the floor lamp and when I asked him to stop because I'm afraid he will tip the lamp over he says, "I am sliding down the firepole Mama"

Jack buddies up with the two teenage kids of Matt's sister. we have to tear Jack away. In the car ride home Jack says, "I am not happy Mama", when I ask him why he says, "I don't want to leave my nice people."

Jack's never been a great sleeper

I tell myself that one day he will be a teenager and it will be all I can do to rile him out of bed and harass him to go walk the dog while I sit at the kitchen table drinking my coffee and reading my book.
But for now Jack takes a long time to go to sleep and he wakes up at obscenely early hours in the morning. I realized in the last couple days that it's due in part to the fact that he doesn't eat a lot of dinner so I think when he stirs in the morning he's really hungry and it's hard for him to go back to sleep.
This morning he woke up at 3:30 demanding strawberries (!). I told him I didn't have any strawberries but I had blueberries if he wanted some. So we laid down in bed together under the covers, I asked him if he was cozy and he said, yes, then he smiled at him and giggled and ate blueberries, occasionally putting one in my mouth too.
So if he's going to wake up at 3:30 AM demanding fruit, at least he shares, right?

I know this isn't the right method for getting him to go back to sleep, okay? I know that I should just tell him it's time to sleep, shut the door and let him cry. I also know I'm not helping him become a better sleeper, and that makes me a bad parent. But you know what? I can't help it. I think that if he wakes up and wants a banana that he must be hungry and if he's sitting on the edge of his bed wide awake telling me he's done sleeping, he's probably not going to just lay down in his bed and turn over and go back to sleep. He's probably going to get up and play, and more often than not, bonk his head or tip something over or open a jar of something I didn't even realize I left out and he's STILL NOT GOING TO SLEEP. I'm not trying to defend my actions, I'm just saying the logic that comes to mind when it's 3:30 in the morning and I'm cold.
And frankly, getting under the covers and singing the ABC song with my warm, cuddly, sweet-smelling little boy with the soft curly head of hair rested against my arm seems pretty attractive. Certainly more attractive than trying to go back to bed and listening to him scream for the next two hours during which I WILL STILL NOT BE GOING TO SLEEP EITHER. So I'll help him pay for his therapy if it ruins him as an adult, which I just don't believe it will.

So I tucked him back in and he slept for another hour, but when he woke up at 4:30 there was no going back to sleep. So we laid in bed and told stories and whatnot until 6 when I finally said it was okay for him to get up.

Only 10 more years 'til he's a teenager...

Recent posts from facebook

Some of you may know that I post Jack stories (but never pictures) on facebook. But I think it makes me neglect the blog.
Anyway, the last few posts were:

what does Fireman Jack love about trick or treating?
locating the "smoke" coming out of the dry iced machine and putting out the fire with his firehose!!

Nov 8: It rained today so we busted out Jack's fireman rain boots. He'll be unstoppable now.

Jack refers to his bedroom to his Fire Department or his Fire Station.

Halloween:

Jack will not be wearing the hand-made-by-local-art-professor-Gail-Dawson-"Max (Where The Wild Things Are)" costume that he looks utterly adorable in and was graciously passed down from animal-loving friend Chester when he outgrew it even though it hasn't a stain on it. No, he will be Fireman Jack. sigh.

yesterday Jack woke up from his nap and rubbed my nose for about 15 minutes. then he said, "I want to tell you the story of Where Are The Wild Things (sic)", which he did. The story took an unexpected turn when Max became a fireman and started putting out forest fires. Max still ended up at home eating his supper that was still warm, but afterward he took off his fire hat and his fire coat and his fire pants and his fire boots and his fire diaper and took a little nap.

Jack and Tycco at classmate Sasha's birthday party

I love Jack and Tycco's relationship. They really operate like twins. Sometimes I can picture them as little old balding men cracking each other up.
We're looking into switching Jack from his current daycare for preschool next year and I have to say that in spite of all the reasons to move him the idea of taking him away from Tycco (and the school he knows) breaks my heart.

I thought I posted these earlier, but maybe I didn't

When we still lived in the Sunset district we would occasionally walk to the farmer's market on Sundays, eat some strawberries and listen to the bands. Jack loves strawberries. As god is my witness, Jack did not pose for these pictures.

combining digital formats

This blog is the only way I post Jack on the internet. Too many crazies out there. But sometimes I post what he says on facebook. Then I forget to post it to the blog.

I also seem to take a lot more pictures with my below-average cell phone because it's handy than I do with an actual camera. Then I have a bunch on my phone and when I'm riding the bus or something I send them to myself, so there is generally a backlog of old pictures. Not to mention the stack of comments from last summer daycare.
Ah well, you do what you can.

These couple of pictures are actually really recent, just last Thursday out at Heron's Head park, walking the dog. Jack kept running towards me laughing and saying he was going to catch me. Then he'd grab my legs and laugh uproariously.

Jack is very preoccupied with working as a fireman these days. The fire department is about three blocks from our house so we frequently drive by on our way to school and whatnot to see if we can see the trucks and the firefighters. Jack is very excited about the fire poles right now. And I was kind of marveling the other day at the fact that in spite of all our technology the fastest way we as a species have figured out to get from one floor to another is still a pole. Kind of beautiful in its simplicity.

Here's a couple of Jack quotes. One is a story that he dictated to me and the other was just one of the many glorious moments of hanging out with him.

"My story is about Fireman Jack with a helmet and his fire coat on and his boots on. And he slide down the pole and he got in his fire engine and he drive to the fire. And then I put out the fire. And THEN everybody clapped their hands for the brave Fireman Jack. He took off his helmet and his boots and then he took a break. He rest on his pillow." -Jack Simon

Jack and I put two straws in a smoothie and while we were drinking he looked up at me from over his straw and said with a mischievous grin, "no laughing!"

Fall 2010 Assessment by Christina Sosa

Social Development:
Jack engages in both parallel and cooperative play with his peers. He will seek to include particular peers in activities that interest him. "Come on Tycco, let's go outside," he says running outside with his friend. Upon arriving at school, Jack benefits from close interactions with his teachers or solitary play before joining the group and exploring the various activities. He has established strong relationships with his caregivers and seeks them out when in need of quiet interactions or comfort. His imagination continues to expand as he uses several different props from around the room and leads his friends in play, taking a train ride, going to the grocery store, and pretending to put out fires. "We are firefighters" Jack says as he points his block in the air and pretends to put out a fire.

Cognitive Development:
Every morning around 11:15 the children come together for a short group time, in which they participate in various activities, identify concepts, match objects, read books, sing songs, etc. Jack is always very excited and eager to join his friends on their red circle mats. "I wanna sit with Tycco," he says. His attention span continues to grow as he sits and listens to Olive, our storyteller, who tells stories from around the world. Jack spends a lot of time constructing in the building area. He is able to stay focused and engaged in a building project for quite some time, constructing fire hoses, buildings, and towers. "Look Megan. It's a big one!" he says proudly.

Areas your child is currently working on include...
Emotional Development:
We continue to help Jack learn appropriate ways to express himself when he experiences conflict with his friends. When upset or frustrated, Jack will often scream or cry. We continue to encourage him to use his words and work out conflicts with his peers independently. "I'm using that" or "I need space" are just a few of the phrases we are working with Jack to remember when he is communicating with his peers.
Self-help:
Jack is working on completing two to three-part instructions independently. For example, after lunch Jack will put his dishes in the dirty dish bin, put his lunchbox in his cubby and wash hands before engaging in play. We continue to encourage him to complete tasks independently within the classroom such as-cleaning up after using materials, opening and closing his lunch box, and taking care of his personal belongings. Towards the end of the semester Jack has become less resistant to using the potty. We are continuing to help him feel more comfortable with this process.

We (teachers, caregivers, families) can help your child learn and develop in the program by...
  • Continuing to provide opportunities for the development of independent conflict resolution, with suggestions and appropriate dialogue
  • Providing opportunities for Jack to further develop his self-help skills and independence.
  • Continuing to provide dialogue that Jack can use to express himself when he's upset or frustrated.
  • Continuing to provide verbal prompts and reminders when asking Jack to follow a two to three-part instruction.
You can help your child learn and develop at home by...
  • Continuing to support Jack's growing desire for independence, offering opportunities for him to develop self-help skills.
  • Providing Jack with dialogue to use to help successfully express his emotions.

Jack tells stories

Jack has been requesting new songs and stories on topics of his choice for a couple weeks now. Most recently he started telling us stories which used to involve a melding of events from school, recently obtained owies, the antics of Thomas the Train and Fireman Sam and trying out new words. Today he started a story out with "Once upon a time there was a fireman named Jack..."

Lucy and Jack

For a while I was determined to get sand into Jack's sandbox. It's cleaner than dirt, doesn't fly around as much and doesn't get muddy, and probably a little more fun to dig in. It's also really expensive and hard to transport if you can find it for free. So we settling on a dirt box for now. We keep it covered when not in use and Lucy enjoys it too.

Chrissy Field, September 9

On a warm day Chrissy Field is great. Lucy can run around and tear it up with the other dogs, Jack can play in the pools of water in the sand. The picture with his hat and coat on is from when we first arrived and Jack looked at the ocean and said, "I don't want to go in the water, I just want to watch...the waves....float."
Later, he was down to his skivvies splashing in and out of the water, digging in the sand.

construction and destruction

Jack wants to read Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel every day at least twice. He is especially interested in the part where Mary Ann can't get any jobs because the new shovels are doing all the work and she and Mike are VERY SAD. He also likes the part where the fire department comes because the steam shovel is making so much smoke they think it is a fire.
He loves the part where the steam shovel is making noise: BANG! CRASH! FASTER AND FASTER! LOUDER AND LOUDER! Jack laughs and yells this part out loud and throws his fists in the air like he's cheering.

Jack is also very interested in breaking things these days. We are trying to figure out things for him to break to direct his energy.

bummer

So I brought Jack back to the Janet Pommeroy center for swimming lessons, but we had to miss the first week because our friend Lisa desperately needed a place for her son Lorem to come and play (see pictures above of warming up after hot afternoon/wading pool fun). So we went to make up on Thursday and for the first time since Jack started swimming his swim diaper leaked poop into the pool! Jack was pretty traumatized. We got out first and when everyone else had to get out, Jack put two and two together and just cried and cried.
Last week he had a cold so we skipped. In the meantime we're trying to get Jack started using pull-ups instead of diapers. Well those looked like swim diapers to him and he wasn't having any of that!!
So today we went to swimming and Jack did not want to go. I told him we would just go watch the other kids and if he didn't want to get in he didn't have to. I also had to borrow a disposable swim diaper from the pool. Jack did not want to put that on either. So we went out to the pool side with Jack in the nude and he watched for a while as the other kids got in the pool. After a while he said that yes, he would like to get in and I told him we had to put on the swim diaper for him to go in the pool. And he did!
Unfortunately, today a different kid pooped in the pool and we all had to get out right after song time! But Jack was willing to wear a pull-up after swim class and even tried his best to pull one up when we were getting him ready for bed tonight.
He really likes to talk about all this pooping in the pool. He says, "Mama, I want to talk about the pool." and I say, "okay, Jack, what happened in the pool" and he rattles off how he went poop in the pool and everyone had to get out and he was sad, etc. Now he ends the story with "there was poop in the pool, but Jack didn't do it, another kid did it!"

ratchet

on a recent visit to a neighbors house Jack became enamored with a ratchet. Sean gave him two to play with and he uses them for everything from fixing Blue Guy's (know by some as Grover's) nose to putting out forest fires and fixing his bed.
Tonight he started pounding on his dresser with them and told Sean he was "making moons!"

today in the garden Jack made rainbows with the hose for the first time.

Daily Record August 13, 2010

Daily Record, August 13, 2010:
Jaeden was looking through the window into the other toddler room and pointing at a book. Teacher Tim noticed and came over to our room with the garbage truck book. "I want a turn" said Jack. "I wanna see it" said Tycco "What's going on O?" asked Armond. Tim read the book out loud and then each child took a turn reading it themselves. All of the children were interested in the new book.

summer drawing to an end

The first image is from the summer newsletter from daycare, shows the kids in Jack's class. We were lucky that even though Monika (who we really liked) left for a study abroad program, she was replaced by Megan who Jack knew a little already and will also be in Jack's transitional room in the fall.

all other photo creds go to Sean. he has an ability to capture moments that I only dream of.

in the morning:
Jack wakes up and calls "Maaaaaaaaaaaaaamaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"
I go in and say, "hi Jack"
He says "I am waking up now"
I ask him what he wants to do. Sometimes he wants to go sit on the potty. Other times he wants to eat breakfast right away. When he sits on the potty he usually says, "it's not working yet." and then when he pees: "it's working!"
this morning he said, "sometimes it takes a little while"

summer childcare is ending and Jack will start the fall in a new, "transition" room. His friend Anna, sadly, will not be there. Her mom graduated and found a French immersion school for Anna near where they live in East Bay. However, Tycco will still be there and also a new friend Jack made named Will.
they won't have intake forms anymore, so maybe I'll finally get caught up on the stack I have sitting by our (still not hooked up) computer at home. And I swear I'll try to do a better job of keeping up to date on the blog in general.

tomorrow Jack and I are planning to plant some pumpkin seeds in his own little section of the garden. I'm going to separate out a little row from the area that he (hopefully) will have a sandbox. Jack is very excited about the pumpkin seeds but I think he thinks there's jack-o-lanterns inside of the envelope. I hope he's not too disappointed when we open it.

ASI ECEC Daily Record August 11, 2010

We have a standing event we go to for July 4th each year. We go down to the strip called Mission Creek park by the boathouses for a community potluck. They always have great stuff for the kids to do like a big tub full of water and music and space to run around.
We stopped at Philz coffee on the way there to load up on caffeine and Jack wanted to see inside my pie box. In the pictures above he is telling me that he wants to eat some of that pie now and he doesn't understand why I am telling him "no".

Blue trash, black trash, green trash.

So you are well aware by now that Jack loves the garbage trucks, our sanitation expert, and the recycling/compost/trash bins. We got these posters at the building when composting became city-wide and Jack said, "Mama, get some tape!" We still go out every Wednesday to watch Paul pick up the trash on our block. Last week Jack, normally bashful around his hero finally waved good-bye as Paul drove away.

go Jack go!

Jack is going a mile a minute. It's hard to keep up with everything he says and does. Here's a couple great pictures Sean took. Jack really likes digging in the sand at the beach. He just keeps going until we tell him it's dark and his hands are cold and we have to go home. He loves making cakes in the sand at the playground too. We put sticks in for candles and sing "Happy Birthday" to Grandma, Nana, Tycco, Anna, Mama, Papa, pretty much anyone Jack loves gets a sand cake. He's also started helping us work in the garden. We pull weeds and Jack puts them in the green trash. Jack still loves the trash, the garbage trucks and of course, Paul, the garbageman.
